Hi, my name is Jake Shalz, I am 11 years old and a 4thyear member of Pleasant Grove 4H. This year I am raising my third market lamb. Throughout my 4 years in 4H I have been involved in the cooking and baking group along with the lamb group, I have also held an office within our club. Besides 4H I am also involved in JR Spartans football and California Gymkhana Association. I have used the skills that I learned in the cooking and baking group to help pay for my market lamb projects and for my horse. I bake brownies and cookies to sell at local events, this helps pay for feed, shavings, supplies and entry fees. Through 4H I have learned many life lessons that I will carry through my adult years, just a couple are responsibility and hard work. I am responsible for feeding and caring for my lamb, I weigh out feed, exercise and make sure their overall health is good. Hard work is making sure I get up in the morning to feed and stay on schedule, working the lamb to make sure it gets the exercise needed to produce a great carcass. Last year my lamb placed 11th out of 111 lambs for carcass, I was proud of that because it was related to my feed and exercise program.
Let me tell you about this year’s project. She is an October 2024 born Ewe lamb, and I have named Cindi Lu. I have had Cindi Lu since February 9th, 2025. When she first arrived, she was wild, I took my time for the next week to get her halter broke and develop a relationship with her. Every two weeks we walk down to our neighbor’s house to weigh, so it is very important that she walks on a halter. Everyday I get her out of her stall and go for walks, and then have increased her exercise along with her feed to bring her along to ensure that we make optimum market weight and ideal body condition by weigh in day at Fair, which is June 16th. We will show at the Yuba Sutter Fair, in Yuba City, Ca on June 18th. The fair is open June 19th- 22nd, with Junior Livestock Auction June 21st at 9 am. I would love to have you attend the fair so I can tell you in person about Cindi Lu. If you are looking to purchase meat for your freezer the auction is great because you are getting high quality meat, along with helping youth in Agriculture. Money that is earned is used to support the next years project. If you are not interested in buying an animal for your freezer, you can choose to do an add on, which is money that is added to the premium that is earned.
I appreciate your time in learning about my project and hope to see you at the Yuba-Sutter Fair Where the West is FUN!!
